Privacy Policy

Short summary — Saily does not require an account. Almost all data stays on your device. The only information sent off your device is the departure and destination coordinates you submit for weather routing, processed by the Saily routing engine.

1. Introduction

Saily ("the App") is a sailing navigation application for iOS and Android. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and your rights regarding that information.

By using the App you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the App.

2. Information We Collect

The App does not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other identifying information. No account or registration is required.

3. Location Data

The App requests access to your device's precise location to display your position on the chart, guide you to waypoints, record tracks, and activate safety features (MOB alert, anchor alarm).

  • Location is processed entirely on your device.
  • When track recording is active, location data is collected in the background even when the screen is locked. The iOS system shows a blue status-bar indicator; Android shows a persistent notification.
  • Location data is never transmitted to any server.

You can revoke location permission at any time in your device's Settings. Doing so will disable positioning and track recording features.

4. Third-Party Services

The App integrates the following third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy.

Mapbox

Provides the interactive nautical chart and satellite imagery. Mapbox processes map tile requests, which may include your IP address and approximate location, in accordance with their own data practices.

Saily Routing Engine (saily.io)

When you request a weather route, the App sends your chosen departure coordinates, destination coordinates, selected polar, and boat performance factor to the saily.io API. No other personal data is transmitted. The coordinates are used solely to compute and return the optimised route.

SHOM (Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine)

Nautical chart overlays (buoys, beacons, wrecks, traffic separation schemes) are downloaded from SHOM's public servers on request. This is a one-way download; no user data is transmitted to SHOM.

5. Data Sharing and Sale

We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties, except as described in Section 4 (routing coordinates sent to the saily.io API strictly to fulfil your request).

We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety or rights of users or the public.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

All data created by the App (waypoints, saved tracks, routings, settings) is stored locally on your device and remains there until you remove it.

  • In-app deletion: go to Menu → Settings → Clear all data to permanently erase all waypoints, track history, saved routings, and settings.
  • Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data from your device.

The routing coordinates you send to the saily.io API are not retained by the App after the response is received.

7. Your Rights (GDPR & Privacy Laws)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or another jurisdiction with applicable privacy laws, you may have the following rights:

  • Access: request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Erasure: request deletion of your data (you can also do this yourself in-app — see Section 6).
  • Restriction: ask us to limit processing of your data.
  • Portability: receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format (GPX export is available in-app).
  • Objection: object to processing based on legitimate interests.

8. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Security

All communication between the App and the saily.io API is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. All data is stored locally on your device, protected by your operating system. We recommend using a device passcode or biometric lock to protect your data.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
